Sporting KC Vs Colorado Rapids: 3 things we learned – Growing pains for both sides
By Nathan Dunn
1. Mixed feelings for Sporting KC
Especially in the first half, Sporting KC failed to execute simple details. With just two changes from the team that lost to Minnesota United, one of which was Richard Sanchez in goal, expectations were quite clear: Sporting KC should build on an impressive performance against the Loons.
Kellyn Acosta’s sixth-minute goal for the Rapids stemmed from poor defending from SKC. Roberto Puncec got drawn-out and dived in before the rest of the defense was to step and close down Acosta’s shooting opportunity.
Once Colorado were reduced to ten, and later to nine men, SKC looked much more fluid in attack. The game seemed to be built up for Colorado to park the bus late in the game, but SKC’s attack finally broke through twice before a third was required to secure the win.
Sporting naturally grew into the game and looked better as it progressed, but it is concerning that they needed the man advantage after Danny Wilson’s red card. They then conceded with a two-man advantage, the Rapids looking to hang on to a gritty point. Graham Zusi, who was the focal point of several SKC attacks in the second half, got a huge slice of luck after his shot was deflected over the keeper and into the net, handing Sporting KC the victory, but it was not exactly deserved.
Peter Vermes’ side remains alive and well in the MLS is Back Tournament. They have also accumulated nine out of a possible 12 points in the regular season thus far. But their performance against the Rapids was far from perfect and leaves some questions unanswered.
