On Friday night, the two top clubs in Group D, Minnesota United and Real Salt Lake, face each other in a pivotal match. Here are three things to watch for.

After both Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United claimed victories in their opening fixtures of the MLS is Back Tournament, the two clubs meet in their second fixture to decide the leader of Group D entering the final matchday.

Both teams earned their victories in different fashions on matchday one. RSL won fairly handily against the Colorado Rapids while Minnesota United left it late in an incredible comeback 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.

With the Group D lead on the line, here are three things to watch for.

3. Another clean sheet for RSL?

Defensively, Real Salt Lake were very strong in their win over the Rapids. They conceded very few high-quality chances and largely dominated in defensive areas of the pitch. This was due to the work done by RSL’s backline, as well as Everton Luiz in midfield.

Luiz performed at a high level against the Rapids, sweeping up any loose balls and clogging up passing lanes into the Rapids attacking players. Kei Kamara was starved of service. If he can deliver a repeat performance against Minnesota, it’s going to be very hard for the Loons to create.

Minnesota, meanwhile, are without MLS Defender of the Year, Ike Opara. And although they were victorious in their first match, they came alive late and conceded several excellent opportunities. With RSL’s excellent defensive record, they cannot be so loose again.
