By Drew Hubbard
1. Courage stay perfect
Coming into this competition, most people wisely picked the North Carolina Courage to leave the preliminary stage on top and eventually leave Utah with the title. While the championship is still up for grabs, the Courage are set up perfectly after winning all four of the group games and earning the number one seed.
There was some question about what kind of team manager Paul Riley would send out, given that his side had already clinched the number one overall seed and had nothing to earn from this game. However, Riley picked arguably his strongest XI yet before playing the Portland Thorns in the first round of the knockouts.
Now, the job for Riley’s side is to win three more games and win another title after winning the last two NWSL championships. While the Courage ended the four-game slate undefeated, North Carolina still had growing pains getting into the competition. It took a late goal to defeat the Thorns in their opener. But as time has progressed, so their form has improved.
North Carolina had high expectations coming into 2020. Thus far, they have fulfilled them. And in doing so, they are set up perfectly to finish yet another season on top.
