2. Sam Mewis in top form

USWNT midfielder Sam Mewis has appeared in every North Carolina Courage game so far. In every game, she has shown why she is one of the best midfielders in the world and a vital part of this North Carolina side.

More from MLS Multiplex

She joins Denise O’Sullivan in the defensive part of the box midfield, although Mewis has more freedom to join the offensive play by breaking forward from deep. Her performance against Sky Blue will steal the headlines because of her goal, but she also started the move in the second goal. She played a perfectly weighted ball to Lynn Williams on the right who then used her speed to find Crystal Dunn in the box.

In the first match of the Challenge Cup, it took Mewis a little longer to get into the game. Perhaps a little rust was evident after a hugely disrupted preseason. In the ensuing games, however, Mewis has found her form.

Mewis is one of the key pieces that makes North Carolina such a brilliant, formidable team. She is the heartbeat of the best midfield in the NWSL, and when she is in top form, as she now looks to be in, the Courage are near impossible to beat.
