2. The midfield battle

Both sides enter Sunday’s matchup with a midfield that showed quality in the first two weeks of action. Both sides are anchored by MLS veterans that will need to stay fresh for the longevity of the tournament for their side to have a successful outing in Orlando.

More from MLS Multiplex

Anchored by veteran midfielder Ozzy Alonso, Minnesota’s midfield is set up with a good balance to support the defense while also providing help going forward, which features the 4-2-3-1 formation. The former Seattle Sounder will be helped by Slovakian international Jan Gregus in the holding midfield role with wingers Robin Lod and Ethan Finlay working further forward with Kevin Molino, who will play the traditional number ten position.

Roger Espinoza is the energizer in midfield for SKC, who use a 4-3-3 shape. The 33-year-old will not be accompanied by the injured Felipe Gutierrez, but Gadi Kinda, an exciting signing who exploded in his first two games earlier this year and Ilie Sanchez, who is crucial to the team’s flow and distribution abilities, will help comprise one of the best midfields in the league.

Off the bench, the only proven option is Gianluca Busio before the little experience of Wan Kuzain, Felipe Hernandez, and Cameron Duke. That is a concern for Vermes and Sporting KC.
