2. Midge Purce still isn’t a defender

In Sky Blue’s last game, fans were shocked to see new signing Margaret ‘Midge’ Purce lined up as at full-back for Freya Coombe’s side. After game one, they were eager to see whether Purce would remain there or play higher up the field where she is much better suited. Once again, she played as a full-back, and once again, it was obvious that isn’t her best position.

It only took a matter of minutes to see this against Utah when she committed a foul in the fifth minute and followed it up with a yellow card moments later. Veteran striker Amy Rodriguez found herself with Purce and then danced around her to draw the foul and booking.

Rodriguez once again exploited Purce’s lack of defensive awareness and sound positioning when she got in behind her — and the entire Sky Blue backline — with ease to get on the end of Boquete’s perfect ball.

After Sky Blue’s first match, manager Coombe said they haven’t ruled out the possibility of playing Purce in a more attacking role and many expected this to be the time to make the switch. However, Purce stayed in defense and Sky Blue couldn’t find the back of the net. Which begs us ask the question, who is going to score for Sky Blue?
