MLS: Top 5 wingers in the league right now
By Matt Coles
1. Diego Rossi
Taking top honours on our list of the best wingers in Major League Soccer right now is an Uruguayan who won the Supporters’ Shield with Los Angeles FC last year, Diego Rossi.
The 22-year-old is one of the brightest sparks in the American top-flight and spent the first part of his professional career with Penarol, where he won the Uruguayan Primera Division in both 2016 and 2017.
MLS Career & Honours:
- Los Angeles FC (2018-)
———————
- Supporters’ Shield – 2019
In December 2017, Rossi signed for LAFC as a Young Designated Player, and he had an instant impact with the expansion side. The Uruguayan scored just 11 minutes into his debut, the season-opener against Seattle Sounders, with what was the franchise’s first-ever goal in Major League Soccer, along with being the fastest ever goal by an expansion side in the history of the league.
He finished his first season in MLS with 12 goals and nine assists, one of the most powerful dual-threat players in the league. Rossi then improved on that in 2019, finding the back of the net 16 times, behind only the imperious Carlos Vela at the Banc. The Uruguayan also added seven assists as LAFC took the Supporters’ Shield with a record points tally.
At just 21-years-old, the winger has his whole career ahead of him, and the 3252 will be very happy if the Uruguayan can continue his wonderful form for the club over the next few years, as they aim to win their first MLS Cup.
