2. Alexandru Mitrita

The second member of our list who moved to Major League Soccer for the 2019 season is New York City FC’s Alexandru Mitrita, and the Romanian comes in at No.2 on our list of the best wingers currently in the league.

Prior to featuring in the American top-flight, Mitrita spent the entirety of his professional career in Europe, and mainly in his home country. He played for Turnu Severin, Viitorul Constanta, Steaua Bucuresti and Universitatea Craiova in Romania, along with a spell with Italian side Pescara.

MLS Career & Honours:

  • New York City FC (2019-)

The Romanian winger joined NYCFC from his hometown club Craiova before the start of the 2019 term, and he immediately showed his abilities in his rookie campaign in the league, having a hand in 15 goals across the regular-season, as the Sky Blues finished top of the Eastern Conference for the first time in their history.

Mitrita found the back of the net 12 times in his first season in the league, and he came 4th in the voting for MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2019, behind only team-mate Heber, Toronto’s Alejandro Pozuelo and the winner, New England’s Carles Gil.

The Romanian was one of three New York City members to score double-digit goals in 2019, alongside the Brazilian Heber and Valentin Castellanos, and he took that form onto the international stage as well, scoring his first two goals for his country in October.
