2. Alejandro Pozuelo

Taking the No.2 spot on our list is another man for whom the 2019 campaign was his first in Major League Soccer, Toronto FC’s Alejandro Pozuelo.

The Spaniard came to MLS having spent time during his professional career across three European countries. He played in his native Spain for both Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, whilst also having spells with Premier League side Swansea City and Belgian side Genk, where he played over 100 league games.

MLS Career & Honours:

  • MLS Best XI – 2019

Pozuelo signed for Toronto from the Belgian side in March 2019, becoming one of the club’s Designated Players and he had an immediate impact. On his debut against New York City FC, the Spaniard scored twice and also recorded an assist for Jozy Altidore.

He finished the regular season with 12 goals, the team’s highest scorer in the league, whilst also recording 12 assists, one of just four players in the league to hit double digits in both categories, alongside compatriot Carles Gil, who also made our list.

Pozuelo then scored twice and recorded three assists, including setting up Jozy Altidore for Toronto’s only goal in their 3-1 defeat to Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final in November. He was named into the MLS Best XI, alongside Gil and Moralez in the midfield. The Spaniard started both matches for TFC at the beginning of the 2020 term, including scoring in their season opener against San Jose Earthquakes.
