MLS: Top 5 attacking midfielders in the league right now
By Matt Coles
4. Maxi Moralez
Coming in at No.4 on our list of the best attacking midfielders in the league right now is the man who led the league in assists in the 2019 campaign, New York City FC’s Maximiliano Moralez.
The 33-year-old had a 12-year professional career in the bag before making the move to the United States, with time spent at Racing, FC Moscow and Velez Sarsfield. His longest spell at a single club came in the Italian leagues, with Atalanta, before a brief stint with Leon ahead of his move to MLS.
MLS Career & Honours:
- New York City FC (2017-)
———————
- MLS Best XI – 2019
In February 2017, Moralez signed for New York City FC as a Designated Player and he has since become one of their most influential players on the field, going on to sign a milt-year contract extension last October, which will see him stay in the Big Apple until at least the end of the 2021 term.
The Argentine’s numbers have got better year-on-year across his three-season spell in Major League Soccer to date, starting with five goals and nine assists in the 2017 campaign, his first in the league. He then scored eight times, whilst recording 16 assists in 2018, playing a career-high 32 regular-season matches in the process.
Moralez then continued to show his class through the 2019 season, recording a league-high 20 assists during the regular-season campaign, whilst also adding seven goals, earning himself a spot in the MLS Best XI for the first time. He currently has 20 goals and 45 assists in 92 league matches, and he was a key part of the NYCFC side that topped the Eastern Conference last season. The playmaker will be a key part of any success the Sky Blues have over the next few years.
