4. Jan Gregus

Coming in at No.4 on our list of the best central midfielders who are currently playing in Major League Soccer is another man who only made the move to the American top-flight ahead of the 2019 term, Minnesota United’s Jan Gregus.

Before making the move Stateside, the Slovakian international spent the entirety of his professional career on European shores, playing for Nitra, Banik Ostrava, Jablonec and most recently, FC Kobenhavn in Denmark.

MLS Career & Honours:

  • Minnesota United (2019-)

Ahead of the 2019 season, Gregus signed for Minnesota United as their third Designated Player and it was an inspired signing, as the central midfielder missed just four games throughout the regular season, mainly due to international commitments with his native Slovakia. Come the end of the regular season, the Slovak midfielder led the Loons in assists, with his 12 only bettered by six other players league-wide.

He was key in getting Minnesota United to the post-season for the first time in their short Major League Soccer history, as he started all 30 of the matches he featured in en-route to the Loons coming home in 4th in the Western Conference.

Gregus then got the 2020 season off to a perfect start, both on an individual and team basis. He played the entire 180 minutes of the Loons’ first two matches before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scoring once and recording two assists, as Minnesota won both matches by high score-lines. The Slovak international will continue to be an integral part of any success that the club has over the next few seasons.
