Nashville SC summer transfer target Maximiliano Romero has the potential to be a star in MLS. He can be their future number nine for a long time.
Nashville SC’s roster-building plans are not done yet. The Major League Soccer expansion team, who have played just two matches in the league in their history, could be on the move for a Designated Player in the summer transfer window.
Per Speedway Soccer, Nashville SC are set to step up interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Maximiliano Romero after his time on loan in Argentina has come to an end. They are said to be keen to add a DP center-forward to the mix, and while they are high on Daniel Rios, who they signed last year, adding an elite-level goalscorer is the next step in assembling a competitive team.

Romero is a 21-year-old striker from Argentina and was signed by PSV in the winter transfer window in 2018. He first broke into the senior game at Velez Sarsfield and returned there this year after failing to break into the PSV first team on a consistent basis with most of his playing time coming with the Dutch club’s U-21 team.
During the 2019-20 Superliga season, Romero scored seven goals and registered three assists in 22 league appearances for Velez. His performance last season in Argentina’s top division, a higher-quality league, indicates that he could have success in MLS.
Nashville’s roster currently has Dominique Badji as their number nine. The MLS veteran is their top striker and there is some level of concern on the depth of the remaining strikers. Rios was a top striker in the USL with back-to-back 20-goal seasons but it remains to be seen if he can replicate his form in MLS. But with only two matches played in MLS, Nashville SC has had little to go off when it comes to evaluating him at the MLS level.
By adding Romero, Nashville gets an instant offensive boost from a player who showed he can be a consistent goal scorer in the Superliga last season. If they end up acquiring Romero, he should immediately become the number one striking option in the squad, forming a potentially lethal triumvirate alongside Randall Leal and Hany Mukhtar.
At 21, he has the potential to be a strong player for the future during Nashville’s building phase. And with his aspiring future and success in Argentina, there is no reason to think he cannot flourish as Nashville SC’s new number nine.
