USMNT: Best starting XI based on FIFA 20 career mode potential
By Ivan Ornelas
Front Three
RW: Christian Pulisic
Age: 20
Starting Rating: 80
Potential: 86
Club: Chelsea
Captain America had to be included in this team, leading this generation of American players into battle. Christian Pulisic came through the Dortmund setup and like Giovanni Reyna is now, made an instant impact that caused not just the United States but the entire world to take notice. The emergence of Jadon Sancho limited Pulisic’s game time, and before Chelsea’s transfer ban took place, he made the move to London. Frank Lampard hasn’t always given the amount of game time Pulisic or American fans wanted, but he’s shown his class on a few occasions such as his hat-trick against Burnley. As much as other players are stepping up, the future of the USMNT still depends largely on Pulisic.
Potential Player Comparisons: Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli/Italy), Leroy Sané (Manchester City/Germany)
LW: Tim Weah
Age: 19
Starting Rating: 69
Potential: 84
Club: Lille
When you are the son of one of the best African players of all time, expectations are high. Despite that, Tim Weah has already played for three big clubs in Paris Saint-Germain, Celtic, and Lille. It would be tough for almost any attacker in the world to get game time at the Parc des Princes, as Mauro Icardi is finding out competing against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, Neymar, and Angel di Maria. Weah then won the Celtic fans over in his loan spell there, and now he faces a new challenge in Lille. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is the biggest competition, but Weah did not cost $10 million for nothing. Now fit, he will fight for his place.
Potential Player Comparisons: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United/England), Memphis Depay (Lyon/Netherlands) (both play Weah’s two positions)
ST: Josh Sargent
Age: 19
Starting Rating: 69
Potential: 83
Club: Werder Bremen
It’s been a difficult season for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, but Josh Sargent continues to put his best foot forward, giving his all so they can avoid relegation. Nicknamed by some as the ‘Ginger Messi’, regardless of where he plays for the USMNT in the future, he has proven that he can provide the goals that have been lacking at times in recent years.
Potential Player Comparisons: Thorgan Hazard (Dortmund/Belgium), Portu (Real Sociedad/Spain) (both Hazard and Portu can play in both of Sargent’s positions)
