The USMNT is building for the future. But what might the best starting XI be in future years? We used FIFA 20 career mode potential to find out.

The United States Men’s National Team has several young players coming through at the club level and making an impact. There is reason to be excited about the future. But, for now, their potential is yet to be realized. We used FIFA 20 career mode to consider the potential of the USMNT and what might be in store in the future.

Here is the FIFA 20 potential best XI complete with a substitutes bench.

Goalkeeper

GK: Zack Steffen

Age: 24

Starting Rating: 77

Potential: 82

Club: Fortuna Dusseldorf (On loan from Manchester City)

Zack Steffen is the clear number one between the sticks, playing at a higher level than any other American goalkeeper. Fans are used to seeing Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Brad Friedel, and Kasey Keller overlap in their careers in top leagues. However, Steffen signed for Manchester City last year and is highly thought of. He’s still very young in goalkeeper years, but Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson is only two years older and looks to be City’s long term starter. Another loan, and potentially eventually a permanent move may be needed.

Potential Player Comparisons: Jasper Cillessen (Valencia/Netherlands), Alphonse Areola (Real Madrid loaned from PSG/France), Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray/Uruguay)
