Seattle Sounders: Team of the Decade
By Tom Rodgers
Attack
Obafemi Martins
One of the most electric players to don the Seattle shirt, Obafemi Martins was exciting and electric during his three years in Washington and contributed a whopping 63 goals in 72 games. His burning pace and incredible strength gave MLS defenders a hard time in every game he played. Martins helped the Sounders to one Supporters’ Shield and is well known for his unbelievable goal against Colorado Rapids when he split two defenders with an unbelievable turn on the bounce and slotted the ball home.
Raul Ruidiaz
One of the newer players on the list, Raul Ruidiaz joined from Morella in June 2018 and has been a hit ever since he arrived. The Peruvian has netted 22 goals in 38 games and helped the Sounders win the MLS Cup in 2019 with 11 goals in 22 games. His tenacity and work-rate has made him hugely popular with supporters and his contributions in front of goal ensure that he will be a cult-hero for years to come.
Clint Dempsey
Last but not least we have ‘Captain America’ himself, Clint Dempsey. The forward spent six years with the Sounders after returning to MLS from Tottenham Hotspur and was a fan favourite throughout. Dempsey appeared 115 times for Seattle and contributed 75 goals and assists.
The American was named as an MLS All-Star three times while turning out at Centurylink Field and also won MLS Comeback Player of the Year in 2017 after an injury-struck 2016. Dempsey helped the Sounders to a Supporters’ Shield, U.S. Open Cup and MLS Cup and is more than deserving to be on this list.
