The 2020 MLS season is two matches old. Upon its resumption, here are three players who are primed for a breakout campaign.

With Major League Soccer teams starting to train once again in preparation for the resumption of the 2020 season, the return appears to be in sight. With two matches in the books, some of the brighter players already shined giving a glimpse of what to expect from them this season. But who might continue their strong form so far this season and who will be the breakout performers of the 2020 season?

Here are three candidates.

3. Maximiliano Urruti

Maxi Urruti is a seasoned MLS forward having been in the league since 2013. He has played in both conferences and in different systems but landed in Montreal in 2019. And it might be north of the border, with new manager Thierry Henry in tow that he finds his best form.

Urruti hasn’t scored more than 12 goals in a season since his arrival in MLS. Last season he was only involved in 10 goals, scoring just four of them. But at 29 years old, this season, he is finally finding a system that works for him, and his form has rocketed as a result.

Henry has used a back-three-based shape with three attacking players relieved of their defensive duties. Samuel Piette and Victor Wanyama or Saphir Tadier marshall central midfield and the wing-back patrol the wide areas of the pitch. This hands Urruti and the other attackers freedom to drift wide, run in behind or drop deep. Urruti has flourished, scoring three goals in 174 minutes already. He is well on his way to breaking his 12-goal record and a breakout season.
