Tyler Adams said that he wants to be the captain of the USMNT. Such ambition is what makes him perfect for the role in the future.

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Every great leader must have an inner sense of belief and conviction, but when that veers into an obnoxious, detestable self-reverence, what they say and do lacks power and punch.

Great leaders possess both a natural gut instinct that they stick to and a humility to admit when they are wrong or lacking. Those moments of vulnerability and weakness are what make a leader relatable, someone who people want to follow, someone who people believe in, not because of rhetoric or fancy communication and a sheer force of will, but because they are real.

And amidst all of this, while weaving these sometimes juxtaposing qualities together into one soul, leaders must be ambitious, both for their own lives and those that they lead. They must have hopes, dreams, aspirations. They must provide drive and impetus towards achieving a goal. Otherwise, what are you leading people towards?

It is quite clear that Tyler Adams has this last bit down to a tee.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder spoke with Herculez Gomez of ESPN FC during the current hiatus. They spoke about a range of subjects, including his dreams to be the captain of the USMNT. On the subject, Adams said:

"“Being a leader. I think that also entails being a captain. I would never shy away from that. I want to be the captain. The responsibility that it takes to go out there, get a group of guys to all be on the same page, be able to develop myself as a leader and also the people around me, I feel like I have had leaders, I have had captains, who have been able to nourish me and I feel like I understand the responsibility of what it takes.”"

In a follow-up debate, Gomez said he loved Adams’ ambition and concluded that he deserves to be given the armband despite the presence of Christian Pulisic:

"“I love that Tyler Adams is saying, ‘I want that responsibility.’ He’s been groomed by great leaders, he understands the responsibility, he understands the role, he cherishes the challenge of taking that responsibility. Why not give it to him? You look what he’s done, you look where is, you look where he’s going, I think he’s made for it.”"

It should be said that Pulisic, too, carries many of the natural leadership qualities that Adams possesses. He is calm, well-spoken, inspirational when he needs to be, and recognises the role he plays in the dressing room as the most expensive and greatest USMNT player in history, despite not yet turning 22. He would be no bad captain.

But Adams’ ambition is pertinent here. It tells of a character who is not afraid of leadership and responsibility. He relishes pressure. He does not shy away from authority but responds to it and recognises how to use it in a positive, contributing manner.
