Inter Miami: 4 potential Designated Players club should sign
By Alex Windley
1. Gonzalo Higuain
Similar to James Rodriguez, Gonzalo Higuain has been floating between clubs since 2018, with shorts loan stints at Chelsea and AC Milan. The latest rumor surrounding the 32-year-old includes a possible transfer to MLS. With Miami in need of a center forward, will Higuain be willing to give up his European dream to be the focal point of La Rosa Negra?
Standing at 6’1″ and known for his clinically finishing ability, the Argentinian would be an alternative yet solid choice at striker. Possessing good technical capabilities with both feet, Higuain is a versatile striker that can drop deep and help link up play, while also using his positional intelligence to get ahead of the defender during counterattacks.
Under Diego Alonso, Higuain can help the team retain possession more creatively and consistently. Instead of lumping a long ball over the top, he’d be able to use his size and technical abilities, dropping deep to alleviate pressure whenever the Inter Miami midfield is getting swarmed.
Whoever Inter Miami decides to sign as their third DP, it will come with much fanfare. Will they go for a midfield maestro or a number nine that is equipped to lead the frontline? Whatever happens, based on GM Paul McDonough’s choices already, the club should be in good hands.
