1. A cut above the rest

Ultimately, there was just something different about Dempsey. He this extra swagger that set him apart from the rest. When most Americans were just known for their pace or strength, their work-rate and their commitment, their industry and high motor, Dempsey had that extra bit of technical ability.

He danced around defenders. He knew how to finish off chances from any shooting angle. His passing wasn’t too shabby, either. He had the attacking craft and nuance that you usually associate with European or South American players.

Dempsey knew this, and he brought an air of confidence every single time he stepped onto the field. No one was going to stop him from doing what he wanted to do. He never feared leaving home and going abroad, and it was a risk that paid off in every possible way.
