MLS: Top 5 CONCACAF players in league history
By Matt Coles
1. Osvaldo Alonso
Taking the top spot on our list of the top five players from the CONCACAF region to have featured in Major League Soccer is the only member to still be playing in the league in 2020, Osvaldo Alonso.
The Cuban started his professional career in his home nation with Pinar del Rio but moved to the United States in 2008 when he signed for Charleston Battery in the USL First Division. After a single year with the club, Alonso made the transition to MLS, signing for the Seattle Sounders ahead of the 2009 term, their debut season in the top flight as an expansion side.
He would go on to play for the Rave Green for ten years, becoming their captain in that time. He led the side to the MLS Cup title in 2016, the first in the club’s history. Prior to the league victory, Alonso was part of four U.S. Open Cup-winning sides, including the team’s first three seasons as an MLS side in 2009, 2010 and 2011. They also won the domestic cup competition in 2014, along with the Supporters’ Shield.
Individually, Alonso was nominated to the MLS All-Star Game for four consecutive years from 2011 to 2014, whilst also being awarded a place in the MLS Best XI for his efforts in the 2012 campaign.
After ten years in Seattle, the Cuban midfielder signed for Minnesota United, and scored the first goal in Allianz Field history, before helping the Loons reach the postseason for the first time in 2019.
