MLS: Top 5 Argentinian players in league history
By Matt Coles
1. Diego Valeri
The man we are naming as the best Argentinian to ever feature in MLS is the only one that still plies his trade in the top flight of American soccer, Diego Valeri. He arrived at the Portland Timbers in 2013 on a loan deal, and after his performances that year, the Timbers signed the Argentinian playmaker to a permanent deal. He remains a Timbers player, and legend, to this day.
Valeri helped the side to the Western Conference final in his first season. Two years later, Portland would go on to win the MLS Cup, with Valeri scoring the quickest-ever MLS Cup final goal, just 27 seconds into the game. He was named MLS Cup MVP for his performance in the final against Columbus Crew.
Individually, Valeri became the most recent Argentinian to be named MLS MVP for his efforts. He provided 21 goals and 11 assists in a fantastic 2017 season. That was also the third season in which the midfielder was named into the MLS Best XI along with the 2013 and 2014 terms. He has also been part of the MLS All-Star side four times in 2014 and then 2016-2018.
Valeri continues to play for the Timbers and has now tallied more than 200 regular-season appearances for the club. He is one of just a select few players to be a part of the 75-75 club with 78 goals and 81 assists and counting. Ultimately, he is one of the greatest players in league history and deservedly sits atop this list.
