The midfielder moved to the United States in April 2007, signing for the Columbus Crew. Despite only spending four seasons with the club, he is recognised by the fans as one of the all-time greats in their club history.
Schelotto was named to the MLS Best XI in both of his first two campaigns in the league, whilst being nominated to the All-Star team in his first three seasons. The 2008 campaign was his best. He was named the MLS MVP after scoring seven goals and assisting 19 others as the Crew went on to lift the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup that season.
The Argentinian played for the Crew through to the end of the 2010 season before returning to his home nation to play for Gimnasia la Plata for a second spell. He left MLS after 102 regular-season matches, in which he scored 33 goals and assisted 41 others. Schelotto returned to MLS in 2019, taking over as manager of LA Galaxy.
