Goalkeepers

Three goalkeepers made the list of top 25 current MLS players: Stefan Frei, Luis Robles, and Bill Hamid. Frei landed at 13th on the list, mostly due to his individual ability to take over a match when needed. At 33, Frei is still in the prime of his career and is the best keeper in the league. His performance in the 2016 MLS Cup is one for the ages and his leadership was key in Seattle’s MLS Cup-winning seasons in 2016 and 2019.

Robles makes the list because of his MLS tenure. To be fair, not many goalkeepers jump out at being the best players in the league, but it felt right to put Robles behind Aaron Long and Michael Bradley but ahead of Graham Zusi and Miles Robinson. Robles was instrumental in the Red Bulls’ Supporters Shield-winning seasons in 2018 and 2015 and he was not named Inter Miami’s first captain for nothing.

Meanwhile, Hamid is the league’s best shot-stopper. He tied for the league lead in shutouts in 2019 and has impressed at D.C. United since becoming a regular starter in 2011.
