MLS: Top 5 Irish players in league history
By Matt Coles
1. Robbie Keane
Unsurprisingly, coming in at the top spot on our list of the best Irishman to ever feature in Major League Soccer is three-time MLS Cup winner and 2014 MLS MVP, Robbie Keane.
Keane joined LA Galaxy in 2011 and instantly became a hit, winning the MLS Cup in 2011, 2012 and 2014 in the most dominant period for a single team in the 25-year history of MLS. During that time, he also won the MLS MVP in 2014, scoring 19 times and assisting on 14 other goals in just 29 regular-season appearances.
The Irishman continued to play for the club for another two seasons before leaving following the end of the 2016 campaign. He finished his time in the States with 83 goals and 45 assists in 125 regular-season matches, while also scoring nine and assisting six in 21 postseason games.
Individually, Keane was voted the LA Galaxy’s Most Valuable Player for four-straight years from 2012-2015 and was voted into the MLS Best XI each year in that spell as well. He won the MLS MVP and MLS Cup awards in 2014 and was part of the MLS All-Star squad in 2015.
Nothing bad can be said about Keane’s time in MLS thanks to three MLS Cups and an average of at least one goal or assist per game. Without doubt, he is the best Irishman to ever play in MLS, and that will be true for a very long time.
