MLS: Top 5 Italian players in league history
By Matt Coles
1. Sebastian Giovinco
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Sebastian Giovinco comes in at the top spot on the list of best Italians to ever play in MLS due to his epic four-year stint with Toronto FC. The forward signed for Toronto FC ahead of the 2015 campaign, becoming the league’s highest-paid player. It was instant success as he broke several records en route to becoming the MLS Golden Boot winner, Newcomer of the Year and MVP, all in his first campaign.
His 22 goals and 16 assists in his debut term broke all kinds of records, some of which were only broken by Carlos Vela after his spectacular season in 2019. In his second campaign with TFC, Giovinco helped the side to win the Canadian Championship, before then achieving a historic treble in 2017, comprising one of the greatest teams in MLS history.
A year later, and Giovinco was part of the side that went all the way to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, where he was awarded the Golden Ball for being the tournament’s best player.
After four seasons in Canada, Giovinco left to join Al-Hilal FC. The little Italian will always be remembered by Toronto fans, though, after scoring 73 goals and assisting 57 others in just 125 matches for the club.
