4. Marco Di Vaio

The second member of that 2012 Montreal Impact side to make our list of the top five Italians to have plied their trade in the American top-flight is striker Marco Di Vaio. Like his compatriot, the Impact were the final club in his distinguished career, one where he scored 230 club goals. Di Vaio is best known for scoring 65 times in 143 league games for Bologna, before signing for Montreal ahead of the 2012 campaign, the Impact’s first in MLS.

The Serie A winner had an instant impact, scoring five times in his first season. Then, in 2013, he flourished, scoring 20 times in 33 games and was voted as part of the MLS Best XI for the campaign.

He helped the side to the Canadian Championship trophy that year, before they then defended their trophy a year later, as Di Vaio was the club’s top scorer for a second consecutive season. Like Ferrari, he retired following the 2014 campaign, with the Italian ending his MLS stint with 34 goals and nine assists in 76 regular-season matches.
