Gonzalo ‘Pity’ Martinez: Atlanta United, Attacking Midfielder, 78 rated: Perfectly Rated

At first glance, 78 might seem high for a player who has only scored five goals in 34 MLS games for Atlanta United. Furthermore, he only scored 22 in 94 appearances for River Plate. However, much of Gonzalo ‘Pity’ Martinez’s career, at least in MLS, has been in a supporting role to lethal striker Josef Martinez.

Pity is also capable of having big performances in big games, scoring the decisive goal in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup Final. I can see Martinez as a player on par with the likes of Fulham’s Tom Cairney or Anderlecht’s Samir Nasri. Nicolas Lodeiro (Sounders) shares his 78 rating and Rodolfo Pizarro (Inter Miami) is one notch down at 77, but just because they have been underrated by FIFA doesn’t mean Pity Martinez is overrated. A 78 rating suits him.
