MLS: Top 3 teams ecstatic with start of season
The MLS season is two weeks old. With time to reflect during a 30-day postponement, here are the top three teams who should be most ecstatic with their start to the season.
While the world deals with the coronavirus, Major League Soccer has been postponed for 30 days — and it could yet be postponed further. The decision came after two weeks of the new 2020 season and will see the campaign return in one form or another in the future.
But which teams should be pleased with their start to the season and which others should be less pleased?
Well, with plenty of time to reflect on the little action we have seen thus far, here are the top three teams who should be ecstatic with their start to the season.
3. Montreal Impact
The Montreal Impact have played five matches in all competitions. In MLS, they have one win and a draw. In the CONCACAF Champions League, they eased through the Round of 16 stage before losing the first leg of their quarter-final, though they still have more than a punter’s chance in the second leg, which will be played following the present postponement.
That is a very strong start to the year, and their performances in MLS have been extremely encouraging — even the draw against FC Dallas showed terrific potential as they went two goals to the good and only dropped points thanks to a stoppage-time concession. More than, that, however, it comes off the back of very limited expectations.
In the offseason, Thierry Henry arrived as head coach with no one knowing how he would fare. Ignacio Piatti, the club’s greatest-ever player departed on the eve of the season. But then Victor Wanyama arrived as a new DP, Maxi Urruti has started the year on fire, while the defence looks excellent, especially the form of young Luis Binks. The Impact are a good team, but what puts them on this list is that very few expected them to be. For that, they should be over the moon.
