New York City FC came so close to upsettng one of the giants of CONCACAF football on Wednesday night. Ronny Deila’s side played host to Tigres UANL in the first leg of their CCL quarter-final against the Mexican giants.

After a terrific first-half performance in which they should have scored two or three, NYCFC ran out of steam late on and eventually conceded a heartbreaker at the death, Eduardo Vargas turning home a rebound in stoppage time.

3. Finish your chances

It is an age-old adage in football: ‘make the most of your dominance’. And in the first half of this match, New York City FC were utterly dominant. Their central midfield was superb, dictating play throughout, aiding their play out from the back and feeding passes into a dangerous front three. The defence played an organised high line to allow the attacking players to press high. Ronny Deila put his players in the positions they needed to take the lead. Only, they didn’t.

There were plenty of reasons for NYCFC’s inability to make the most of their chances. Heber fired into the near post, Alexandru Mitrita couldn’t quite find his range from distance, Alex Ring miscued a volley from the edge of the area, while Ismael Tajouri-Shradi saw a couple of good efforts well saved. And then there was the general decision-making in the final third, which was atrocious.

Time and time again, a pass was played by an NYCFC attacker and it would go to a space where another player was not. They were not in-sync with one another. And everyone was equally culpable. Mitrita delayed passes at times, Tajouri-Shradi made poor decisions, Heber chose the wrong run at the wrong time and then when he did make the right run the pass couldn’t find him. It culminated in NYCFC failing to take advantage of the openings they so brilliantly created. And we all know what happens when you do not take your chances. Enter, Eduardo Vargas.
