This move could do one of two things: create competition for the job that only increases the Rapids level of play defensively, or create instability on the pitch. Yarbrough’s presence on the roster has been made official, but any news regarding his role with the team that is enjoying an undefeated season two games in with their current goalkeeper is still unknown.
But as we watched the story unfold on Saturday, Clint Irwin is still the man in goal. After a solid performance against D.C. United, he continued his strong play against Orlando City and helped his team keep all three points. He made four saves on the night and could do little to prevent Chris Mueller’s equalizer.
It is a bit of a mixed bag for a team when a goalkeeper has a good match. There are still discrepancies in the Rapids backline that were apparent against a team that finished 11th in the Eastern Conference last year. But Irwin is playing well, and for now, the starting role is his until he loses it.
