1. Toronto FC the superior Eastern elite

Both Toronto FC and New York City FC are expected to compete at the sharp end of the Eastern Conference this season. They were two of the premier teams in the conference last year, NYCFC finishing the regular season on top and TFC representing the East in MLS Cup, and much of both teams’ cores have returned for 2020, with a few key additions here and there.

If this early-season outing proved anything, it was that Toronto FC are ready to take on the mantle as the truly elite Eastern team. With Josef Martinez set to miss the season for Atlanta United, Philadelphia losing in Week 1 to FC Dallas, and the remainder of the East not looking especially formidable, the conference is there for the taking.

Based on this performance, as well as the impending return of Michael Bradley to the central midfield and arrival of third DP Pablo Piatti on the wing, Toronto FC might just be the best of the bunch and the one Eastern team capable of holding a candle to the seemingly superior Western powerhouses.

NYCFC and Toronto FC will meet again. And they might well meet again in the playoffs beyond that. But, for now, it is TFC that hold the bragging rights.
