USWNT Vs England: 3 things we learned – Christen Press impresses again
By Daniel Garza
On Thursday night, the opening match of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup resulted in a 2-0 win for the USWNT over England. Here are three things we learned.
It was a successful opening at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup for the United States Women’s National Team. They defeated England by a comfortable 2-0 scoreline in what could turn out to be the match that decides the title. Christen Press and Cari Lloyd got on the scoresheet as the U.S. earned yet another clean sheet to continue their perfect defensive record in 2020.
After defeating The Lionesses at the 2019 World Cup in France, the USWNT were able to get another victory over the talented English squad. It was a hotly contested affair that lived up to the semi-final rematch expectations, but, like last summer, it was the U.S. that once again came out on top.
Here are three things we learned from the USWNT’s victory.
3. First test of the year a success
England are the highest-ranked country in the FIFA world rankings that the USWNT have faced this year. This was the first real test of 2020 as England were poised to compete for the Gold Medal in Tokyo this summer. During last year’s SheBelieves Cup, Phil Neville’s side picked up a 2-2 draw against the U.S. en route to winning the tournament.
An opening fixture against England, then, was always going to be a tough test. But after putting together a rather dominant performance, the USWNT showed very few signs of poor form. They outshot their opponents and were very dangerous offensively.
This result signals to the other teams competing in the Olympics this summer that the USWNT are showing no signs of slowing down in their dominance. And all of this was accomplished without Alex Morgan. It’s shaping up to be another incredible year for the star-studded USWNT.
