San Jose Earthquakes vs. Minnesota United

An all-Western Conference clash between the San Jose Earthquakes and Minnesota United makes our top-five matches to watch this week thanks to their results on the opening weekend.

More from MLS Multiplex

Starting with the visitors, the Loons went to Portland and came away with a comfortable 3-1 victory that most would not have expected going into the season. It was arguably one of the club’s most complete performances in their three years (and a game) in the league to date. A double from Kevin Molino and a debut strike from Luis Amarilla gave Minnesota the win, with the clean sheet only being marred by a Diego Valeri penalty in the second half.

Meanwhile, the ‘Quakes bring momentum into this clash as they came back from two goals down against Toronto FC on the opening day to force a draw and take a point away from their fixture. Oswaldo Alannis scored a scorching freekick in the dying seconds to rescue the draw which could lead Matias Almeyda’s men into a spurt of confidence this week.

The head-to-head record is in favour of the hosts. They have won four of the six matches contested between the sides in the regular season over the past three years. However, Minnesota did the double over San Jose in 2019, scoring three times in both matches. Will the Loons continue that run or can the hosts find their form again and take their first victory of the new season?
