LA Galaxy: 2020 Preview – Welcome, Javier Hernandez
By Matt Coles
2020 Outlook
Like their city rivals, Los Angeles FC, the LA Galaxy only planned a preseason featuring four matches ahead of the regular season, with all four coming in California. The Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC, Colorado Rapids and the Chicago Fire all come to California to comprise an all-MLS preseason
The Galaxy’s campaign proper starts on the road on February 29 when they travel to face the Houston Dynamo. Their home opener comes a week later in Carson against the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 7. They then face MLS new-boys Inter Miami CF, ahead of a three-match road trip to Minnesota United, the Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC, all postseason sides from last year.
The first El Trafico comes at the Banc of California Stadium on May 16. The Galaxy then face the reigning MLS Cup champions, Seattle Sounders, on June 21, with a clash against the second of the expansion sides for 2020, Nashville SC, two weeks later.
LAFC will be the opponents once again on August 23, ahead of a tricky two-game stretch, which sees the Galaxy face last year’s Eastern Conference winners, New York City FC, ahead of a trip to Seattle to face the Sounders at CenturyLink Field. Their final three games come against the Colorado Rapids, Nashville SC and FC Dallas.
Thanks to finishing inside the top six in the Western Conference in 2019, the LA Galaxy will go straight into the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. They also feature in the Leagues Cup in 2020, where they will face a Liga MX side in the first round.
With the loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, there is a big void to fill. The likes of Pavon and Hernandez will have to step up, but a playoff berth is still on the cards for a talented Galaxy side.
