USMNT: Stardom awaits for Sergino Dest
By Sam Minton
USMNT defender Sergino Dest is garnering interest Bayern Munich. Should he make the move to one of the top teams in Germany, it would be huge for the defender and U.S. soccer.
Sergino Dest has dominated the U.S. Men’s National Team headlines for awhile. He is one of the best up and coming defenders in the entire pool — and, in fact, in world football for that matter — and is beginning to make waves as a premier starter for Ajax, both in the Eredivise and in Europe.
At the end of 2019, Dest was faced with a tough decision. He was born in the Netherlands to a Surinamese-American father and a Dutch mother. He could play for both America, who clearly wanted him and had worked hard to develop a relationship with him, and the Netherlands, a European powerhouse that represented the higher level of competition.
Dest ultimately ended up choosing the USMNT. It was a surprise, and a major coup for Gregg Berhalter and co.
Ajax are one of the best clubs in the Eredivisie. And Dest is a crucial reason why. In 16 games this season, he has five assists. He has experience facing against the top clubs in Europe playing in the Champions League and is integral to the youthful set-up at one of the world’s most historic clubs, especially when it comes to the development of talent.
However, while still just a teenager, as many Ajax prodigy’s have proven in the past, the Dutch team is often just a stepping stone for greater things. And that might very well now be the case for Dest.
The latest rumors link Dest with a move to German giants, Bayern Munich. An offer of €20 million reportedly was not enough to snag Dest away from Ajax. Still, Bayern are hoping to grab Dest in the summer transfer window when teams are more conducive to selling their stars.

Obviously, this would be a big move for Dest. Ajax has had their success, but they don’t match up to Munich, a team synonymous with relentless success, both domestically and on the European stage.
Dest would be playing in the same league that has molded Christian Pulisic and now Gio Reyna, features Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie, and also in the same squad as former MLS and young Canadian star, Alphonso Davies. Dest is already on pace to become a key part of the United States defense; a move to Bayern could help him become a USMNT star.
When watching Dest, it is difficult not to be impressed by his offensive skills. His speed, as well as his ball control and skill, make him extremely dangerous in the final third. Dest has added some hardware to his shelf as well earning the Man of the Match award against PSV in the club’s last match. He is playing well, earning plaudits, and attracting attention. But the next step to stardom still awaits.
So, while we all may have to wait until the summertime, Dest could be headed to Germany and Bayern Munich. And if does, stardom, surely, looms.
