Gaston Pereiro of PSV Eindhoven has been linked as a target of FC Cincinnati. Alongside Yuya Kubo, he would represent an offensive revolution at FCC.

Even after adding Japan international Yuya Kubo to a Designated Player deal earlier this week, FC Cincinnati’s search for their next DP continues.

This time, it is another European-based target, Gaston Pereiro of PSV Eindhoven. The Uruguayan has been reported as a player PSV are hoping to sell during the winter transfer window and FC Cincinnati would like to add another attacking DP alongside Kubo.

Pereiro’s contract will end with PSV at the end of the 2019/20 season and his current club would want to sell him now to avoid losing him on a free transfer during the summer. As a result, he could be available on the cheap, although Cincinnati are not the only club linked with several Serie A clubs being named as potential suitors also.

During the summer transfer window, the Uruguayan had apparently been set to join Spartak Moscow in Russia. However, that deal did not go through and he still awaits an exit.

In 2015, Pereiro joined PSV from Nacional in Uruguay. He’s gone on to have a decent career in the Netherlands. He scored 11 goals in 29 appearances in his first full season in the Eredivisie and has scored at least 10 goals in each season since then.

The 2019/20 season has seen Pereiro fall out of the starting XI after being a part of PSV’s UEFA Champions League squad last season. This has been mainly due to the collarbone injury he sustained in the summer. Just four appearances have come for the attacking midfielder in the Eredivise this season with two goals to his name.

The recent non-involvement in the PSV starting XI should not come as too much of a worry for FC Cincinnati given the injury. The Dutch club have also added some talented young players which has contributed to Pereiro’s lack of playing time. Mohamed Ihattaren, who is just 17, has been the go-to attacking midfielder in the PSV lineup. Pereiro might not be the current starter, but that does not mean he has not been productive for PSV.

If Cincinnati can pull off this, then Pereiro would become the highest-profile player on the club’s roster. He would instantly become their biggest offensive threat and offer a consistent goal-scoring presence. Pereiro is the type of player who can aid in offering Cincinnati a much better result in their sophomore season.

Combining him with Kubo might just revolutionise an attack that scored just 31 goals in 34 games last season, six fewer than any other team in MLS. While Fanendo Adi is still a DP problem that FC Cincinnati will be desperate to solve, Pereiro — and Kubo — would inject an element of quality that FCC desperately require.
