Seattle Sounders: 5 questions for the 2020 season
By Paul Taylor
1. Will the Sounders repeat as MLS Cup champions?
Champions League glory will understandably be at the forefront of the mind for a lot of players, fans and management alike. However, winning back-to-back MLS Cups would also be special for the franchise.
Only three teams have won consecutive MLS Cups in league history. D.C. United won the first two in 1996-97, followed by the Houston Dynamo in 2006-07 and the LA Galaxy in 2011-12.
In addition, another win would see the Sounders sit all along in third place with three MLS Cups, behind the Galaxy and D.C. United with five and four respectively. The Rave Green are currently tied with Sporting Kansas City, Houston Dynamo and the San Jose Earthquakes.
Finally, just an appearance alone would cement Seattle’s standing as a dynasty. The Galaxy appeared in four of six finals between 2009-14, D.C. United made four successive appearances between 1996-99 and the New England Revolution went to three consecutive MLS Cup finals between 2005-07.
Will the Seattle Sounders actually win the MLS Cup in 2020? It’s tough to say, but as they proved in both 2016 and 2019, as long as they find a way to qualify for the playoffs, anything can happen.
