6. Sporting KC overcomes Philadelphia

In 2015, Peter Vermes claimed his third trophy since 2012 by defeating the Philadelphia Union in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final on penalties. After Sebastien Le Toux made it 1-0, Krisztian Nemeth equalized with a beautiful curling effort in the 65th minute, sending the game to extra-time.

After 30 more minutes without a goal, it was sent to penalties, where Jordi Quintilla scored the winning spot-kick to give SKC the 7-6 win. This was their third U.S. Open Cup triumph, and it was their only Open Cup Final victory away from home, though there were many passionate supporters who traveled to Philadelphia for the match.

By the end of the decade, Sporting KC would win three U.S. Open Cups — the other two have not been forgotten. This was the second of the trio and saw Vermes establish his team as a truly elite force in MLS and American soccer.
