MLS: Best XI of the decade
Front Three
Who is the greatest goalscorer in MLS history? It is not the easiest question to answer. Do you select the man with the most goals? Do you select the man with greatest longevity and consistency? Or what about short-lived single-season excellence? I want to balance all of these elements, and so, to lead this MLS Team of Decade I have selected Bradley Wright-Phillips, who both enjoyed terrific individual seasons of sheer greatness and produced consistently over an extended period.
To partner Wright-Phillips, I have selected Robbie Keane. Five years, 92 goals, 51 assists, three MLS Cups, one Supporters’ Shield, four-straight Best XI appearances, and an MVP award. It is very difficult to argue with those statistics. He also helped inspire arguably the greatest dynasty in MLS history.
Finally, you cannot have a Team of the Decade without Chris Wondolowski. The highest scorer in league history, the 2012 MVP with 27 goals in a season, scored 152 goals across the decade, more than any other player. Perhaps he is being rewarded for consistent goodness, not greatness, but it is exceptional to be one of the premier goalscorers in the league year on year for a decade.
Honourable Mentions: Sebastian Giovinco, Kei Kamara, Josef Martinez, Landon Donovan, David Villa
