USMNT abroad: Sergino Dest assist leads the way

Sergino Dest was the lone USMNT player to have an impact on the scoresheet this weekend. Find out how the rest fared following the international break.

The final international break of 2019 is behind us and the next few months will primarily focus on club football for the United States Men’s National Team players around the world. And this week, the usual suspects were in action.

Sergino Dest was the one player who stood out among the USMNT players in Europe. The Ajax defender registered an assist against Heracles as the Dutch club won 4-1.

In England, Christian Pulisic was apart of one of the biggest matches on Saturday as he played all 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

For both these players, the attention will turn to the mid-week return of the UEFA Champions League. Chelsea will play Valencia and Ajax take on Lille. Both player’s respective clubs are among a three-way fight for first place in the group as Ajax, Chelsea, and Valencia are all level on points heading into matchday five.

These are some of the biggest club games in world football and USMNT players are set to play key roles in them. Whatever you may think of the present trajectory of the national team, that is a major improvement on the general talent of the team throughout the decades.

How the rest fared

  • Zack Steffen and Alfredo Morales were met with defeat as Fortuna Düsseldorf fell to Bayern Munich 4-0.
  • Weston McKennie entered in the 73rd minute of Schalke’s 2-1 win over Werder Bremen. Josh Sargent was on the bench for Bremen but did not enter as a substitute.
