1. VAR controversy

With eight goals and both sides trading comebacks, it is easy to forget about one huge turning point in this match: Carlos Vela’s second goal.

The Mexican put the home side 2-0 up in the 40th minute after a beautiful, slick move involving Latif Blessing and Brian Rodriguez, with the latter squaring it to Vela. However, upon further inspection, it would appear that the Uruguayan had strayed fractionally offside before he received the return pass from Blessing:

Yes, it was mightily close, but that is what VAR is for. Quite how the technology, which was obviously reviewing the incident in the ear of referee Kevin Stott, missed this one is baffling. Sure, LAFC won by two clear goals in the end, but that second strike really left the Galaxy with a mountain to climb. Who knows how the game would have played out if that decision had been overturned?
