3. Angelo Rodriguez

As Angelo Rodriguez’s free header floated hopelessly wide of the net in Minnesota United’s playoff loss to the LA Galaxy, many Loons fans couldn’t help but feel like the miss perfectly encapsulated the Colombian’s time in MLS.

Rodriguez is a classic hold-up striker, using his size and strength to bully defenders, and he got into good spots as a result. But when push came to shove, the brawny Colombian couldn’t finish the chances that were expected of him. Quite simply, he did not score enough goals and was largely outplayed by youngster Mason Toye, who seems to be the future of the Minnesota United striker position.

Rodriguez scored just five goals in 1800 minutes this season. For any center-forward, that is not a good enough strike-rate. For one that is a Designated Player, it is absolutely criminal.

Andy Greder of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Monday that the club was unlikely to bring back Rodriguez next season. And given his performances this season, that seems quite justified.
