D.C. United

Bill Hamid – 2 – Looked nervous throughout the night and just could not get his handling right. Fumbled Pozuelo’s shot straight into the path of Delgado for the opening goal in the first half and continued to leak goals thereafter. A real bad night at the office at the worst possible time for a goalkeeper who has been fantastic all season.

Paul Arriola – 2 – Was so sloppy in possession, something which cost his side dear in extra-time, giving the ball away for Toronto’s second goal. Rightly booked for a poor challenge on Layrea and sent off minutes later for a professional foul.

More from MLS Multiplex

Steve Birnbaum – 8 – Won a ridiculous 12 aerial duels and made four clearances. Birnbaum has had an outstanding season and, on a personal level, didn’t really deserve to be on the end of this thrashing.

Frederic Brillant – 8 – Was excellent alongside Birnbaum, with whom he’s formed a strong partnership. Provided the flick-on for Rodriguez’s equaliser but he and Birnbaum were totally let down by their teammates in extra-time.

Joseph Mora – 6 – Put it on a plate for Rooney with an excellent delivery in the second half and tried his best to supply an outlet for DC down the left after half time.

Russell Canouse – 5 – Spent more time trying to keep pace with Toronto’s play rather than dictating any sort of tempo himself. Was uncomfortable at full-back and totally flooded when he moved into midfield.

Felipe – 6 – Was visibly distressed after going down under no contact. Made two interceptions before being forced off just before half-time and was working hard in midfield.

Junior Moreno – 5 – Like Canouse, spent more time trying to stem the Toronto tide than actually influencing the game himself.

Ulises Segura – 6 – Tried his best to create for Rooney but just couldn’t find that killer pass and had a lack of other options to aim for.

Lucas Rodriguez – 7 – Scored the equaliser with his first shot of the game. That should have been the catalyst for his side but for their total capitulation afterwards.

Wayne Rooney – 5 – Only had one truly effective spell during the second half but was twice denied by Westberg when, the second time at least, he really should have scored. Had a goal ruled out for offside during the first half. How does this defeat and premature departure from MLS affect his legacy?

Subs:

Ola Kamara (45 mins, for Felipe) – 5 – Plenty of movement when he came on but fluffed his biggest chance, running through one-on-one with Westberg but firing the ball straight at him.

Luciano Acosta (78 mins, for Segura) – 3 – Absolutely woeful when he came on, giving the ball away time after time and failing to create anything of note.

Emmanuel Boateng (88 mins, for Mora) – 5 – Was an ineffective substitute as DC totally collapsed in extra-time.

Leonardo Jara (105 mins, for Rooney) – 5 – Was there every really much he could do replacing Rooney with his side 5-1 down?
