Santiago Solari is still the heavy favourite to be named Inter Miami head coach. And yet, he is yet to be so. The delay, for a 2020 start, is a growing concern.

For Inter Miami, the plans of a generation are finally being put into place. Their first Major League Soccer season is finally here. 2020 is just around the corner.

David Beckham and his consortium have been busy making plans. Stadium plans. Player plans. Organisational plans. But they do not yet have anyone to execute them.

Inter Miami are still yet to name a head coach. While the playoffs are ongoing and the 14 teams who qualified for the postseason will be focusing on the immediate chance at glory, for those that were not so lucky last season, the gaze has already turned to 2020 and beyond.

The Colorado Rapids are making a move for centre-back Lalas Abubakar. The Chicago Fire have already bid goodbye to Bastian Schweinsteiger and Nemanja Nikolic, while signing Real Madrid midfielder Alvaro Medran. FC Cincinnati have brought back the majority of their roster. Matias Almeyda has come and gone from San Jose but is now set to stay. And yet, Inter Miami still do not have a head coach.

The favourite for the role is still Santiago Solari. As betting analyst Alex Donohue revealed for US Bookies, the odds are heading in the favour of Solari:

"“Santiago Solari is the overwhelming favourite to add to join the emerging force in South Florida and the odds suggest it wouldn’t take much to tempt Solari to try his hand in the MLS. The former team-mate of David Beckham isn’t likely to decline the opportunity, but the list of runners and riders strongly indicates that Inter Miami look capable of luring one of football’s big names into their dugout.”"

The latest odds for the new managerial appointment are as follows:

  • Santiago Solari: 1/3
  • Patrick Vieira: 8/1
  • Roy Keane: 16/1
  • Zinedine Zidane: 33/1

Quite what will come of Inter Miami’s decision remains to be seen. For what it is worth, Solari is now being touted as a possible target for Orlando City, who fired James O’Connor earlier this month as they search for an injection ahead of the 2020 season. If Miami delay too much, not only will they not have the man in place in time for him to implement genuine and effective plans; they will miss out on the man they want altogether.

Solari, then, is still the favourite and most expect him to reunite with Beckham soon. But the longer this decision takes, the more confusing and concerning the process is. The panic stage has not yet been reached, but it is looming.
