5. Record-breaking Vela seals Golden Boot

Have they made that new superlative to describe the 2019 iteration of Carlos Vela yet? No? Okay, well, we’ll try and do him justice anyway.

For a short time on Sunday, the Mexican’s Golden Boot title looked under threat after Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring in LA Galaxy’s 4-2 defeat to Houston Dynamo after just nine minutes. However, all doubts were very quickly erased as Vela scored three brilliant goals in just 23 minutes to put LAFC in complete control against Colorado Rapids, sealing his Golden Boot and breaking Josef Martinez’s single-season goalscoring record, finishing up on 34.

That performance on Sunday was a perfect summary of Vela’s MVP season and in the process, was enough to deliver three more points to hand LAFC the MLS regular season points record with 72. Form rediscovered, can anyone stop them in the playoffs?
