3. Minnesota United

For the first time in their short MLS history, Minnesota United are going to play in the postseason. But they needed a big turnaround in their match against Sporting KC on Wednesday to clinch their spot.

It did not look like it would be the Loons day in the opening stages. Botond Barath’s 7th-minute strike gave the visitors the lead at Allianz Field. And Sporting KC looked good for the lead through to the halfway point of the second half, when Minnesota came fighting back.

A goal from Osvaldo Alonso brought them level. The midfielder diverted the ball into the SKC net after a near-post flick on from a corner kick. And then, in the 90th minute, the Loons took the lead in front of their adoring fans as Hassani Dotson’s effort deflected past Tim Melia to give the hosts the three points they needed to clinch a playoff spot for the first time.

The Loons will go into the postseason in good spirits, with it being their first trip to the playoffs, and with the good run of form that they are on. They have kept 12 clean sheets this season, more than in their previous two MLS campaigns combined, whilst also being more prolific in front of goal. Could the Loons make it a double for the 2017 expansion sides, following on from Atlanta’s victory in the MLS Cup final last year?
