MLS: Top 5 performances from Week 28 – Zlatan Ibrahimovic shines
By Matt Coles
It was a busy week of MLS action with four games in midweek as well as a full slate of weekend action, with plenty of goals and vital wins across the board. Here are the top five performances from Week 28.
Well, what a week of Major League Soccer. Perhaps the most dramatic match was between the LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City. Nine goals in the match, with the Californian side scoring the majority of those in a 7-2 victory.
Elsewhere, the Seattle Sounders beat the New York Red Bulls 4-2, whilst Minnesota United got the better of Real Salt Lake 3-1. Orlando City and the New England Revolution put on a six-goal thriller for the fans in Florida, while Toronto were the victors in a five-goal game against the Colorado Rapids.
A possible MLS Cup final clash between Los Angeles FC and the Philadelphia Union ended in a stalemate, with the game finishing 1-1. LAFC have already wrapped up the Western Conference title, while the Union are still hunting the Eastern Conference trophy with just a few games to go in the regular season.
The East is currently being led by New York City FC, who got four points from their two games this week. Meanwhile, there are still plenty of sides in the playoff hunt in both Conferences, meaning the run-in could just be spectacular.
Here are our top five performers from the week’s action.
5. CJ Sapong
The Chicago Fire put four goals past FC Dallas inside the opening 40 minutes at SeatGeek Stadium on Saturday evening, with forward CJ Sapong bagging two of them. The American opened the scoring after just seven minutes at the weekend, giving Chicago an early lead, before Przemyslaw Frankowski then doubled the margin eight minutes later.
Sapong then scored his second on the half-hour mark, knocking in a near-post header from a corner to make it 3-0 to the hosts. It was almost a second career MLS hat-trick for Sapong, though, who hit the woodwork in the second half, as he was inches away from his third on the day.
Chicago really have to now win their remaining matches to have any chance of making the post-season this year, and they will need more performances like Saturday’s from Sapong might just help them to do exactly that!
