2. Mason Toye

The final match of the weekend saw Minnesota United travel to California to face the runaway league leaders, Los Angeles FC, in their backyard. The Loons came into the match off the back of a painful U.S. Open Cup final defeat on Wednesday night in Atlanta, but on Sunday evening, they got the win to push their playoff hopes back to the forefront of their minds. And the man they have to thank is 20-year-old striker, Mason Toye.

Toye, the Loons’ first pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, stole the show on Sunday, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory for the visitors. Both were wonderful curling efforts with his favoured left foot.

The first saw him set free down the right side by Jan Gregus, before cutting back onto his left and curling one round Pablo Sisniega in the LAFC goal. His second was arguably better, as he got the ball around 25 yards out and unleashed another curling effort. This time, he found the opposite corner of Sisniega’s net, doubling the lead for MNUFC. It was a terrific solo performance from Toye that handed the best team in MLS history their first home defeat of the season.
