Striker Josh Sargent highlighted the USMNT players abroad with his first goal of the season in the Bundesliga. Here is a full round-up.

The week before the international break had plenty of the United States Men’s National Team players in action for their clubs. A few were able to contribute in scoring while others got in a full 90 minutes before joining their national teammates this week.

We begin with Josh Sargent, who scored his first goal of the season for Werder Bremen in spectacular fashion. The 19-year-old striker scored a match-tying goal for Bremen in the 21st minute, collecting a pass with a terrific first touch before dinking the goalkeeper and rolling the ball into the net after reaching it on the other side. All three points belonged to Bremen as well as the match finished 3-2.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Alfredo Morales and Zack Steffen were in action for Fortuna Düsseldorf in a 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. Morales did pick up an assist on Düsseldorf’s lone goal scored by Rouwen Hennings.

Weston McKennie played 90 minutes for Schalke in their first win of the season. John Brooks had a 90-minute outing for Wolfsburg in a 1-1 draw. Both of these players were named to the USMNT roster by Greg Berhalter.

Goals and Champions League qualification

Ian Harkes of Dundee United was on the mark in the Scottish second division. The 24-year-old former D.C United player scored in a 6-2 win over Dundee.

Also finding the back of the net was Ventura Alvardo of Nexaca. The forward scored in a 3-2 Liga MX victory over Club Tijuana.

There will be a few USMNT players to watch for during the UEFA Champions League group stage. Sergino Dest and Ethan Horvath saw their clubs advance to the next phase of the competition during the final qualification rounds this week. Ajax and Club Brugge will face some stern tests during the group stage but this will certainly develop these players even further at the highest level.

How the rest fared

  • Christian Pulisic played all 90 minutes for Chelsea in their 2-2 draw with Sheffield United.

Tim Weah injury and Chris Durkin headed to Belgium

Tim Weah, unfortunately, picked up an injury this week which will keep him out of the USMNT roster. The Lille player was reportedly injured during a training session.

In transfer news, Chris Durkin will be headed to play in Belgium’s top flight. Durkin will be on loan at Sint-Truidense V.V from D.C. United. This move should be a good loan spell for Durkin who was impressive at the FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier this year.

USMNT gets ready for friendlies

Attention now shifts to the international break for the USMNT. This will be the final tests for the U.S. before the CONCACAF Nations League begins. On Friday, they face Mexico in a rematch of the Gold Cup final. Then, they will encounter a tough opponent in Uruguay on the following Tuesday.
