MLS: Top 5 performances from Week 24’s midweek slate
By Matt Coles
There were five games in MLS on Wednesday night, and on our top five performers list from the midweek slate, we have one from each match. Here they are.
Five games, no draws. Orlando City, Minnesota United, Real Salt Lake, LA Galaxy and the Portland Timbers all took victories in midweek Major League Soccer action.
RSL had the best result of the night, as they leapfrogged opponents Seattle Sounders in the race for the home playoff berths in the West. That result also allowed both MNUFC and the Galaxy to move ahead of the Sounders, with the Rave Green dropping down to fifth. Meanwhile, the win for Portland saw them move into the top seven in the Conference, while Orlando’s victory puts them just below the playoff line in the Eastern.
Here are our top five performers from the midweek action.
5. Tesho Akindele
The first man on our midweek list plays for the Lions, and it was his goal that helped Orlando City to victory over Sporting KC on Wednesday evening. The Lions only needed a single goal to take the victory over the two-time MLS Cup Champions, as they continue to make their push for the playoffs.
The goal came from Tesho Akindele, the forward they acquired from FC Dallas at the end of the 2018 campaign. He struck with just over 20 minutes of the game gone, blasting the ball home from Carlos Ascues’ pull back to the penalty spot.
Orlando then managed to hold on for the crucial three points, which now puts them level on points with seventh-placed Montreal in the East. Akindele’s nine goals this season have helped push the Lions into touching distance of the post-season. They will be looking for their striker to keep scoring over the last stretch of league games.
